Martin Canin has had a distinguished career as one of the most prominent piano pedagogues in the United States. He began his teaching career as assistant to the pre-eminent teacher of her day, Mme. Rosina Lhevinne at The Juilliard School where Mr. Canin had been her student. Subsequent to her retirement Mr. Canin was appointed to the faculty where he continues to teach and where, over the years, he has taught numerous major prize winners of international piano competitions, among them, Busoni, Van Cliburn, Liszt-Bartok, Casadesus, Kapell, Tokyo International, Seoul International and Queen Elizabeth of Belgium. In addition to his work with his gifted students, Mr. Canin has performed both as soloist and in chamber music to exceptional critical acclaim. The noted critic Virgil Thompson wrote about his performance of the Brahms D Minor Concerto that ﾒpiano playing so beautiful from every point of view is rare.ﾓ He has performed in Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan as well as in Europe and the U.S. and Canada. He has given masterclasses on all three continents plus Australia and he has served as a juror on numerous international piano competitions throughout the world. He has edited music for Editions Salabert, has recorded works of Brahms for Spectrum Records and he has also been contributing editor to Piano Quarterly magazine.
Mr. Canin was born in New York City where his teachers were the noted Austrian-born pianist, composer and conductor, Robert Scholz and later Mme. Olga Samaroff and at Juilliard, Mme. Rosina Lhevinne. In addition to his position at the Juilliard School, Mr. Canin also serves as Visiting Professor at the City University of New York and as Adjunct Professor at New York University. Mr. Canin was a guest artist in the 1st Aloha International Piano Festival in June 2006 in Honolulu and was presented in a solo recital. In the summer he participates in the Bowdoin College Festival in Brunswick, Maine.
